Machangulo Beach Lodge - Maputo
HOTEL OVERVIEW
At the tip of the Machangulo peninsula, this is the closest luxury beach lodge to Maputo or indeed South Africa’s Kruger Park, making it the ideal choice for a bush-and-beach combination. The lodge organizes boat transfers from Maputo (one hour) - these are contracted by the lodge and are not included in package price as the fee is payable direct upon arrival; these boat transfers are subject to weather conditions due to strong winds because of the lodge’s location, and the calmest period is conveniently May to September.
A wide variety of activities can be enjoyed for all ages and skill levels: swimming, snorkel and SUP off the shore, explore the 1km long house reef or head out to the various dive sites, kayak the mangrove estuaries or try your hand at one of the world class catch-and-release fishing sites. On land walk kilometres of pristine beach, hike the dunes, visit the local village's beach bar or take a trip to the nearby islands.
Service is meticulous and attentive with enthusiastic English-speaking guides in charge of various activities. If you want something a little less adventurous, but a little more luxurious than lounging by the pool or lying on the beach, the spa overlooking the Indian Ocean concentrates on massages and facials starting from around US$25 per person per treatment.
Built vertically at various levels on platforms from exotic hardwoods, the thatched-roof bungalows, each with their own private deck and walkway, seem universally African at first glance. The interiors, however, furnished with colourful batik cloths called capulanas, are distinctly Mozambican. ‘Barefoot luxury’ may be an overused cliché, but it conveys perfectly the lodge’s character. The obligatory four-poster beds with mosquito nets are the most eye-catching feature in every room, but you’ll soon appreciate details such as canvas curtains, teak furniture and rattan armchairs. Bathrooms are open-plan with enclosed showers, while loos almost certainly have views. Privacy is so absolute under the surrounding guarri trees, casuarinas and white ironwoods that you can close your eyes and pretend you’re marooned. There are no televisions anywhere in the resort. A true paradise retreat.

What To Pack
As a guide, the maximum weight for checked luggage is 20kg in economy class and 30kg in business class. Your hand-luggage should not weigh more than 6kg and needs to be small and compact.
Take along your best beach and casual wear, perfect for the day. A light rain jacket might come in handy in the event of the occasional rain shower. Sunglasses and suntan lotion are a must. Flip flops, sun hat and a beach bag. If you’re planning on adventuring around the island (there’s so much more to see and do outside of your hotel!) be sure to pack a pair of comfy walking shoes, and lots of suncream!

Take Your Own
Don’t forget any medication that you might need, and be sure to pack it in your hand luggage.
Chargers for all your devices (it’s a good idea to take along a few movies on a tablet or something similar as the English TV channels in your hotel may be limited).
Take along your own goggles & snorkels – even though your resort will have this equipment available free of charge or to hire, you’ll probably be happier having your own.
Mosquito repellent. An underwater camera is a great idea.

Travel Tips
Pack a change of clothing in your hand luggage in case of baggage delays (and a spare cozzie so at least you can have a swim when you get to your resort). No sharp objects are permitted in your hand luggage (yes, tweezers are sharp!). Put electronics, medication, toothbrushes and jewellery in your carry-on bag.
Travel insurance is a must. If you can’t afford it, you can’t afford to travel! Travelling with kids – please check that you have all the relevant documents including unabridged Birth Certificates.
It’s often a good idea to let your bank or credit card company know that you’re travelling outside of the country.
